How to reset a phone to its factory settings

A factory reset will erase all data from the storage space of your phone, including:

  • Your accounts
  • App data and system settings
  • Installed apps, music files, images, and all files in the internal storage
     
    1. Make sure to back up your data before a factory reset. Please refer to:Backing up your phone/tablet; A factory reset will not change the version of your phone.
    2. Before resetting your phone, log out of your HUAWEI ID. Otherwise, your phone may not be activated after the reset. (To log out, open Settings, search for HUAWEI ID to access the Account center, then touch Log out at the bottom of the screen.)
    3. If you have logged in to your Google account, you will be asked to verify your account password after a forced factory reset. Please enter the account password you logged in before to start the machine normally. If you forgot your Google account password, please follow the steps of forgeting your password to recover Google account details.

Method 1

Open Settings, go to System & updates > Reset > Factory data reset, and touch Reset phone. You will be asked to enter the lock screen password if it has been set. Please follow the on-screen prompts to reset.

Method 2

1. Please make sure that the phone/tablet is turned off and the USB cable is not connected.

2. Please enter Recovery mode according to your model:

Press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds. When the power-on vibration occurs, press and hold the volume up button for about 2 seconds. The system enters the recovery mode after about 10 seconds of black screen.

HUAWEI MatePad Paper

Press and hold the power button and volume up button until the word HUAWEI is displayed.

Models without physical volume buttons

After the phone vibrates, press the power button for five times to enter Recovery mode.

Other models

Press and hold the power button and volume up button until the phone vibrates for 5 seconds to enter Recovery mode.

3. Please press the volume up and down keys or touch the screen to select clear data and press the power key to confirm;

4. By pressing the volume up and down keys or clicking on the touch screen, choose to restore factory settings, and press the power button to confirm;

For some models, you need to enter yes for confirmation before restoring factory settings.

5. After the factory settings are restored, touch Back to return to the Recovery screen. Touch Restart to access the device home screen.
